Naivasha is a town in Kenya, lying 92.8 km (57.7 mi) by road north west of Nairobi. It is considered one of the most important towns in Kenya for its educational institutions, medical facilities and commercial activities. In recent years, it has become an important stopover for tourists visiting Kenya as well as a center for shopping and entertainment.
The town was founded in 1892 by the British Government and named after Sir Edgar Wollaston Wilson, who had been nominated for the governorship of Nairobi but died before he could be appointed. The town grew rapidly in the 1930s due to its location at an important junction on the railway line that connected Nairobi to Uganda and Kenya Colony (now Kenya).
